The true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target.
Jessica Chastain has yet to do wrong in my eyes. She has get again portrayed an amazingly smart, kick-ass woman with a very clever story to tell. Molly’s Game is a 2 hour and 20 minute film where we are enticed into the story of real life Molly Bloom, who like many of us, had a plan on how her life would go and as life would have it, things didn’t go according to plan so she had to come up with a plan B, C & D. People may disagree but I actually found the story to be a very motivational one and as my regular readers will know, I am all for kick-ass female girl bosses. Molly had originally had her heart set in competing in skiing, only to be temporally set back by major back surgery’s a teenager and then lost out on competing in the Olympics due to a bad fall in her late teens (movie version not real life). She then moved to LA working as a waitress for a while, she then started her carrier that would lead her to the world of poker. She was then… mostly for being too good, it was after this she started a competitive business to her former boss and completely knocking him off the table and becoming a millionaire in the process. For the viewer, I think, this is quite inspiring, now unfortunately, obvious spoiler alert if you read the plot, but things go to shit and she needs a lawyer, step in handsome hunk, Idris Elba. Every scene containing both of these actors is so captivating that you just want more. Molly is someone, whom is so smart, so quick on her feet and so beautiful to look at (not only is Jessica beautiful but check out the real Molly Bloom) that you just want more and more.
Now I was constantly lost on all poker talk, which there is a lot of throughout, it is a film about a ‘poker princess’ after all, but otherwise I found this film to be a very entertaining film to watch and with a star studded cast. I suppose it’s also great to have such a ‘girl boss’ film out this time of year, showing us all what is possible, once you believe in yourself, you are determined and you are smart about how you operate (unfortunately Molly let her guard down near the end). But it is also a very captivating film to watch for the storyline and to see how a totally different world operates…….. who the hell can spend $250,000. to just buy into a game??? People in New York who like poker can. Definitely something to see over the next few weeks.
- Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain only had 10 days of filming together due to their conflicting schedules, but got 45 hard pages of script done in the first 6 days.
- Molly bloom who is actually banned from Canada, was granted a 48 hour pass into the country for the film premier.
- All of the extras in the poker games are actually professional poker players, as director Aaron Sorkin wanted a rich raw feel and look to the scenes down to the way they hold and deal their cards.
